I’ve made it through this autumn so far without mum flu. If I get through ’til spring it will be my second year flu free. Whoop whoop!
I’ve had a few snivels and sore throats and been slightly under par, yes.
But not full blown, take to my bed flu.
Want to know the secret to warding off flu? It’s so simple…
Here’s my flu-bout story
The first three winters after my daughter was born it was a different story.
Every year I had three or four bouts of knock-me-out flu with a temperature of 102-103 degrees.
You don’t need me to tell you, that as a mum it was a complete disaster.
However hard you try, you reach a point where you just can’t keep going and you can’t care for your kids. As a single mum, I was very lucky my mum could come and help … I don’t know how I would have coped without her.
I was really at my wits end as to what to do. I had the flu vaccine each year after my daughter was born but it hadn’t helped at all. So I read around to see if I could find a natural flu treatment that would make a difference.
A natural flu deterrent that works
Some things I read were sceptical about the effectiveness of any flu treatment – they claimed serial bouts of flu were just part of motherhood. Young kids pick up everything going because they haven’t built up their immunity and you catch if off them.
But I wasn’t totally convinced.
Because, you see even before my daughter was born, I’d suffered with flu.
Since college I’d had a bout of some “itis” or just about every winter. So I suspected something else was making me susceptible to flu.
And there was. It was vitamin D. Or rather lack of it.
Apparently lots of us in northern climates really struggle to get enough vitamin D during our grey winters. And can fail to stock up in the summer because we don’t spend enough time outside and when we do, we slap on too much sun cream that prevents vitamin D from being absorbed.
And vitamin D is nature’s own natural flu treatment. It helps us fight infections generally and is especially good for respiratory infections like flu.
It turned out I was very vulnerable because at college I developed Vitiligo, a disease that destroys your pigment. I have lost 80% of mine so have worn factor 50 sun cream every single day … even in winter! … since college.
The sun cream protected my skin but left me massively short on vitamin D.
So I started taking vitamin D daily and the results have been amazing.
I haven’t had flu since and I haven’t needed any other flu treatment.
Now obviously, I am not a doctor. I’m cannot give medical advice. But Vitamin D supplements are the best natural flu treatment I have found for me.
I am constantly trying to live a healthier lifestyle. Lots of water, fresh air, sleep, exercise, relaxation and loads of veg definitely make me feel healthier. But you know what, sometimes the healthy stuff doesn’t happen.
By sticking to my daily vitamin D dose, I have managed to stay free of those dreaded bouts of energy crushing flu even during those less healthy times.
If you are struggling as a mum with constant bouts of flu and haven’t found a flu treatment that works, I would recommend you get your Vitamin D levels checked out. A daily supplement has made such a difference to me.
