8 fabulously fun Cinco de Mayo games to play with friends and family
Includes: Free PDF printable Cinco de Mayo Candy Dice & This Or That games
Cinco de Mayo is a wonderful opportunity to get together with friends and family just as summer feels like it’s starting to kick in.
Of course, it is also important to remember that Cinco de Mayo marks the annual celebration of the Mexican victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.
That said, the day is marked far more widely across the United States than it is in Mexico itself.

If you fancy playing some fun games I’ve put together a few favourites that are spot on for celebrating Mexican Independence Day.
I’ve also include a free PDF Cinco de Mayo version of the Candy Dice game, a perennial party favouite with kids and teens.
Fun games to spice up your cinco de mayo
1. Hot Chilli Challenge
I’d say this game is really only for adults, though you might let older teens take a shot at it.
If you really want to turn up the heat on your party guests, the Hot Chilli Challenge is the way to do it.
This game is for those who dare to test their spice tolerance, much in line with the YouTube series Hot Ones, but with chilli peppers rather than sauce.
How to play:
- Have two sets of chillis ranging from mild to super hot
- Pit guests against one another
- Each contestant in a round starts with the mildest chilli and progresses through
- The contestant who manages to cope with the hottest of the chillis wins
Be sure to have glasses of milk to hand to calm burning mouths.
The Paul Rudd episode of Hot Ones is one of my favourites.
2. Guacamole Guessing Game
This game is perfect for fooling foodies and you can choose to make it as tame or as revolting as you like.
How to play:
- Prepare several batches of guacamole, each with a unique but subtle difference. For example:
- Chocolate
- Sardines
- Chilli
- Cheese
- Ketchup
- Blindfold each of the players and have them each taste one guacamole at a time.
- They must then write down what they believe the secret ingredient is
- The player with the most correct guesses wins.
3. Piñata!
It would be weird not to, right?!
This one is really for the kids, but sugar-crazed adults may well want to join in too.
Just in case you don’t know the rules…
- Hang a piñata filled with candy at a height accessible to all players.
- Blindfold the player, spin them around a few times, and let them have a go at hitting the piñata with a stick.
- Each player gets a turn, and the game continues until the piñata breaks open.
- Once the piñata is broken, everyone can dive on the treats.
Here’s a couple of piñatas that are popular buys. There’s a classic donkey and if, like me, hitting even inanimate objects that have eyes makes you feel sad, this cactus is a great alternative.
4. Taco Tower Challenge
The Taco Tower Challenge is like Jenga… but with tacos. Who knew?!
In short, the aim of the game is to see who can add the last layer to the tower before it topples.
The game works well for adults and kids alike.
How to play:
- Provide a bunch of hard shell tacos.
- Players take turns adding a taco to the tower.
- The game continues until the tower falls.
5. Taco Relay Race
Staying with tacos. How about setting up a Taco Relay Race?!
How to play:
You can play with real hard shell tacos or you could make tacos out of card.
- Gather your tacos (real or card) and divide players up into teams of even numbers.
- Set up filling stations at each end of the race track
- Lettuce
- Tomatoes
- Guacamole
- Sour cream
- Cheese
- Peppers
- The first player in each team runs the first leg of the race and fills their taco at the opposite end of the track with the first filling.
- They then hand the taco to their team mate, who must run back to the start of the track and add the next filling
- The game continues until all the fillings have been added
- The winning team is the one who manages to finish the race with all the fillings and without dropping a thing.
6. Cactus Ring Toss
I just love the idea of this game, as much because it makes the wearer of the catcus look silly and b. because it can get awfully competitive.
How to play:
- Unless you are really good at crafting, your best bet is to buy an inflatable Cactus Ring Toss game.
- Party guests take it in turns to wear the catcus and everyone else takes their turn throwing the inflatable hoops.
- Needless to say, the player who scores the most hoops over the cactus wins.

7. Free Cinco De Mayo Candy Dice Game
I’ve designed a free printable Cinco De Mayo Candy Dice game.
The candy dice game is a great little game to keep kids entertained.
How to play:
- Stock up on candy, I think jelly beans are great for this Cinco De Mayo version of the game (If you do fancy spicing the game up for older teens or adults, you could buy some hot Beanboozled Fiery Jelly Beans)
- Print out the free PDF game – see form below to grab the game and follow the instructions.

8. Free This Or That Game
This Or That games are always great for getting friends and family relaxed and in the party mood.
How To Play:
- Print out the free PDF game – see form below to grab the game and follow the instructions.
- Spice it up a little for adults by turning it into a drinking game. For example, the option with the least votes means taking a sip of drink (or a shot, depending on how hardcore you want to be!)
