12 DIY Advent Calendars You Can Make With Simple Supplies

DIY Advent calendar ideas arranged in a calm Scandinavian Christmas settingPin

You don’t need to build a tiny wooden village to make an Advent calendar. Envelopes, paper bags or a box you already own can look lovely and be much easier to fill.

I’ve kept these DIY calendar ideas practical: each includes the basic method and what it can hold. Choose one format, number your dates and let the contents do the rest.

1. Envelope basket calendar

You’ll need: 24 envelopes, a pen and a basket or shallow box.

Number the envelopes, fill them with notes or flat surprises and place them upright in date order. Fold larger activity sheets to fit. This is my easiest choice for a calendar made mostly of messages, photos and plans.

2. Numbered paper-bag basket

You’ll need: 24 paper bags, labels and a basket.

Stand the bags in the basket, add the fillers and fold each top closed. Put the date where it remains visible. Use larger bags only where the gifts need them so the whole display doesn’t become enormous.

3. A shoebox of daily surprises

You’ll need: one clean sturdy box, wrapping paper if wanted and numbered packets.

Cover the box or leave it plain, then add 24 individually labeled gifts or notes. Arrange early dates at the top. This works well when gifts vary in size and you don’t want a hanging display.

4. A 12-day tray

You’ll need: 12 small bags or envelopes and a tray.

Label December 13–24 for a Christmas Eve finish. Arrange the openings in two rows or stand them in a container. A shorter countdown gives you fewer fillers to source and more space for each one.

5. Folded-paper pocket board

You’ll need: sturdy backing card, paper, adhesive and a pen.

Fold 24 paper rectangles into pockets and attach them firmly to the board. Test one with your intended filler before making the rest. Use for lightweight notes only and keep the finished board where it won’t fall or invite climbing.

6. A recipe-card countdown

You’ll need: 24 cards, a recipe box or envelope holder.

Write a date on each card and add recipes, meal memories or short food plans. Keep perishables out of the display and use a note to direct the recipient to properly stored ingredients.

7. A photo-envelope calendar

You’ll need: photo prints, envelopes and a small box.

Put a photo and a short note in each envelope. Number them in the order you’d like the story to unfold. Choose images the recipient will enjoy seeing, especially if the calendar is displayed in a shared space.

8. A reusable pouch basket

You’ll need: existing small fabric pouches or bags and paper number tags.

Check that each pouch is clean and suitable for its contents. Add numbered tags and arrange them in a basket. Keep food in its original suitable packaging; the fabric pouch is just the outer wrapper.

9. One daily delivery box

You’ll need: one reusable box and 24 numbered cards.

Put that day’s surprise in the box each evening or morning. Store the other contents separately with your master list. This is useful when space is limited or when a young child shouldn’t have access to all the fillers at once.

10. A paper-chain prompt calendar

You’ll need: paper strips, a pen and suitable adhesive.

Write one activity inside each strip, add the date outside and assemble the chain so the next date is easy to reach. Keep the chain with an adult, especially around young children, and avoid hanging it near beds or where it encourages climbing.

11. A shared household bowl

You’ll need: 24 folded notes and a bowl.

Write one dated shared activity or treat on each note. Everyone can take turns opening the day’s note. If order matters, put the notes in numbered envelopes so nobody needs to rummage for a date.

12. A book-and-note countdown

You’ll need: books you own or have borrowed, date markers and a box.

Pair selected dates with a book and use story-choice notes on the remaining days. Check library return dates and avoid adhesive on borrowed books. You can repeat favorites; 24 new books are not required.

Choose the format that suits the contents

For notes, photos and activities, choose envelopes or folded cards. For physical gifts, bags or a box give you more room. For supervised toddler openings, an adult-controlled daily box keeps the ritual simple.

Test the largest intended filler before buying the remaining supplies. Allow room for the original packaging, labels and instructions.

Plan the 2026 dates before numbering

December 1 is a Tuesday. Put longer activities on December 5–6, 12–13 and 19–20 if those weekends suit you. A 24-day countdown ends on Thursday, December 24.

Keep the finish simple

Choose two or three colors, repeat the same number style and stop there. Avoid buying a craft kit for a project you could make from paper already at home.

Use stable displays and adult-managed tools. Inspect reused containers for damage and skip anything that previously held chemicals or unsuitable materials. I’d choose a simple safe box over an elaborate display that makes daily opening awkward.
