Vision boards, “that girl” stationery, cute planners and aesthetic journaling are everywhere for tweens and teens and the trend is showing on signs of abating. Which is no doub the reason that vision board nights are trending on Pinterest and TikTok as a cosy way to set goals, hang out with friends and take photos that look great on their grids.

So instead of hosting a regular party until midnight, how about turning New Year’s Eve into a chilled vision board and goal setting night?! Browse our New Year’s Eve Ideas collection for more ways to celebrate.

Think chilled vibes, munchable snacks, mocktails, boards spread out across the floor and everyone creating their own “this is what I want next year to feel like” collage.

And A Vision Board Night Is…

A vision board night is basically:

  • Friends or siblings hanging out
  • A stack of magazines, printed out pictures or Pinterest images
  • Scissors, glue, pens and stickers
  • Music, snacks and a bit of chat about what everyone wants from the next year

Instead of just listing resolutions that disappear by January, teens are creating visual boards filled with images, words and quotes that match how they want life to feel.

They can:

  • Make a big physical board for their room
  • Create a smaller page for a planner or notebook
  • Or do a digital version on a phone, laptop or Canva template

You can keep it very light. It does not need to be deep and serious unless your teen wants it to be.

Set the vibe for a cosy uplifting night in

You don’t need to go overboard… small touches make it feel special.

Choose your guest list

This works for:

  • Sisters or siblings only
  • A couple of close friends
  • A full sleepover group if you are combining it with a New Year’s Eve sleepover

Keep numbers small enough that they can all sit round a table or on the floor together.

Set up the space

You do not need a huge room. A living room floor or dining table is fine.

Simple ideas:

  • Fairy lights, candles (or LED candles for super safety!!)
  • Cushions and blankets on the floor
  • A central snack board and drinks tray
  • Something for everyone to lean on if they are making actual boards

Put on a playlist they love or let them take turns being “DJ”.

Gather supplies for teen friendly vision boards

Here’s a quick rundown of things that will come in useful…

  • Magazines and catalogues
  • A small stack of A3 or A4 card for boards
  • Scissors and glue sticks
  • Washi tape, highlighters and gel pens
  • Stickers or washi dots if you already have them
  • Access to a printer if they want to print a few images or quotes from Pinterest or Canva

For digital boards…

  • Use Canva on a laptop or tablet
  • Create a collage in their photos app
  • Make a private Pinterest board as a “vision dump”

The main thing is that they choose images and words that feel inspiring to them.

Start with gentle reflection, not pressure

Before they start cutting and sticking, give them a few prompts to get things off to a good start… use the free printable prompt sheet or come up with your own…

You can do this out loud or on paper:

  • Three good things from this year
  • One thing that felt hard but they got through
  • One thing they are proud of
  • One thing they want to do more of next year
  • One thing they are happy to leave behind

This is not about perfect answers. It is just a way to move their brains from “scrolling” into “reflecting”.

Choose themes and focus areas for their boards

Vision boards can be a bit overwhelming if the whole of life is on one page. Many people find it easier to pick a few themes.

Things that might go down well with teens:

  • Friends and social life
  • School, grades or study habits
  • Hobbies, sports and creative projects
  • Health and movement that feels good
  • Confidence and self belief
  • “Vibes” for next year, like cosy, adventurous, organised, calm

They can either:

  • Split one board into sections for different areas
  • Make one board just for “vibes” and keep goals elsewhere in a notebook

Encourage them to pick a few words or phrases that sum up how they want the next year to feel.

Make the vision boards

Once they have themes, it is time to cut and stick.

Ideas to suggest:

  • Images that match how they want life to look and feel
  • Words, headlines or phrases from magazines
  • Quotes they like
  • Their “word for the year” in big letters
  • Small drawings or doodles

Remind them that boards do not have to look perfect. Social media is full of very curated vision boards, but real life boards are allowed to be messy.

For digital boards, suggest:

  • One wallpaper for their lock screen
  • One collage they can print and stick above a desk
  • One private Pinterest board they can add to over time

Turn dreams into tiny, realistic goals

Vision boards are great for inspiration. To make them useful, help them pick a few tiny actions to go with the pictures.

You can ask:

  • “What is one small thing you can do in January that fits this board?”
  • “What would ‘next week you’ be glad you started?”

Encourage:

  • One or two mini goals for school or learning
  • One fun or creative goal
  • One wellbeing or “looking after myself” habit

You might want to link gently to your new year resolutions post as a parent facing piece that sits alongside this.

You can also plan a short check in:

  • A mini “vision board catch up” at the end of January
  • A quick peek at the boards on New Year’s Eve next year
