Especially if you just rely on your washing powder or liquid to clean them out during a cycle in the washing machine.

Well, here’s my tried and trusted way to remove paint from clothes.

I’ve used this method since my daughter was little, coming home with paint over her clothes and uniform from kindergarten and school.

THE EASY WAY TO GET PAINT OUT OF KIDS’ CLOTHES – THAT REALLY WORKS

PAINT REMOVAL SUPPLIES

  • Washing up liquid, like Fairy Washing Up Liquid
  • Laundry ball (the kind that comes with clothes-washing liquid)
  • Laundry brush, OXO does a great laundry brush. It’s really easy to handle, it doesn’t cost very much, and it is definitely worth the investment
  • Water

PAINT REMOVAL METHOD

  1. If there is a lot of paint, scrape off the excess with the outer bristles of the laundry brush
  2. Mix a good squirt of washing up liquid with water and splash it onto the paint stains. Stain removal works best when the paint is wet
  3. Rub the paint stains with the laundry ball or brush. Laundry balls have little bumps on the bottom of them which are great for scrubbing gently at stains in clothes
  4. Put your hand inside the fabric and rub the stained fabric onto your hand. This seems to work well to really rub at the stain. You will end up with what looks like an even bigger mess
  5. Rinse the t-shirt out with cool water
  6. Continue rubbing for three or four minutes
  7. After this time you will find all of the paint has gone from the t-shirt
  8. The t-shirt is now ready to go into the wash on its usual washing cycle

  1. I’m so glad I found this! My child seems spilled the whole bottle of paint on herself, the dress is still green but significantly less, I’ll try again.
Any updated advice, if all else fails? Lol
    Thank you!

  2. I’m glad this is still online. I read all kinds of complicated instructions for dealing with paint stains, then saw this – from a mom about kids’ clothes after painting. It worked! Thank you, thank you. Blue paint on his favorite red shirt is gone.

  3. Terrific idea to get pain out of clothing, especially now that school has started. Thank you for sharing with the Clever Chicks Blog Hop! I hope you’ll join us again next week!

  4. This is awesome… Do you have to do this while the paint is still wet or will it work dry? My kiddos wipe all paint on hands on their clothes. We are running out of “fun” clothes to where outside of the house! I’ll have to check out the laundry ball

    1. Hi Michelle – not at all, will work on dried in paint as long as you haven’t already put it in the machine. The machine will set the colour and then it’s pretty hard to find anything to get it out 🙁

  5. Such a great tip! My daughter loves to paint and I am dreadful at laundry stains, and doesn’t it always seem to be their best outfit? Will have to save this for later. Thanks!

    1. It was such a revelation to me Kristen … just so gutted I didn’t know it from the start!
