HOW TO THROW THE MOST MAGICAL UNICORN BIRTHDAY PARTY YOUR CHILD WILL REMEMBER FOREVER
Unicorns are consistently one of the most popular themes for kids’ birthday parties.
So, how do you throw a party that stands out from all the other unicorn-sprinkled events?
By choosing the cutest decorations, food, games and activities, that’s how!
I’ve rounded up some of the best ideas and inspiration for planning and hosting a truly magical unicorn party that the birthday girl or boy will remember forever.
GET THE PARTY GALLOPING WITH SOME UNICORN GAMES AND ACTIVITIES
Here’s a bunch of ideas for unicorn-inspired and unicorn-involving party games and activities to entertain all the kids.
Take your pick, choose one or two more energetic games and then some more chilled activities.
1. UNICORN COLOURING IN
I find it a good idea to have some colouring in pages to hand for kids to sit quietly and colour either at the start of the party or when they fancy a little time out.
I’ve created a free printable set of simple unicorn colouring pages featuring a cute little Kawaii-style unicorn.
2. UNICORN TAG
If you want an energetic game to get the kids cantering around, you can’t go far wrong with a game of Unicorn Tag.
The main difference between the classic game of Tag and Unicorn Tag is that the person who is ‘It’ is actually a unicorn, brought to life by wearing some form of unicorn headwear.
- Nominate one player to be the ‘Unicorn’ and have them stand in the middle of the playing area.
- Get all the other players to spread out around the rest of the playing area.
- When the game starts the aim is for the Unicorn to chase the other players until they can tag one of them, by tapping them and shouting ‘tag’… or indeed, ‘unicorn’.
- Once a player has been tagged they become the Unicorn and the previous Unicorn becomes a player.
- The game continues until everyone has had enough.
- …. or there is another version, where each tagged player becomes a unicorn and must help tag all the other players until all the players have been turned into unicorns
Props: Why not go the whole hog and get an LED-lit unicorn headband like this one?!
4. STRING UP A PIÑATA
How about a unicorn piñata, though granted it does feel a little odd to encourage children to whack a unicorn with a stick.
Mind you, if you feel strongly enough about it, you could provide a piñata with tags to pull instead, that’s what we did for my daughter’s fourth birthday party.
Here are some of the cutest unicorn piñatas I could find, including the one we had for my daughter’s 4th birthday.
If you’re feeling crafty, you could make a DIY mini unicorn piñata
5. PIN THE HORN ON THE UNICORN
Pin the Horn on the Unicorn is a riff on the classic party game of pin the Tail on the Donkey. To be fair, there’s no reason why you couldn’t just set up a game of pin the tail on the unicorn, except that it doesn’t rhyme!
This version of the game caught my eye because of the googly eyes on the blindfold!
6. SET UP A PHOTO BOOTH
Photo booths for taking selfies are popular with tweens (and even pre-tweens!) and make a great incidental activity that the kids can gravitate towards in between doing more structured activities or games.
You can buy a unicorn backdrop and unicorn photo frames, but I quite like the idea of buying a bunch of unicorn selfie props and then using a generic photo frame, that could be reused for another birthday.
7. SUPER FUN UNICORN PARTY GAMES
Grab this set of six Unicorn Party Games from my shop, MML Playful Printables. There’s a Unicorn Word Search, Unicorn This or That, Unicorn Word Scramble, Unicorn Selfie Scavenger Hunt, Unicorn Candy Dice Game and a quiz to find out Who Knows The Birthday Boy or Girl Best.
8. GET THE KIDS CRAFTING
There are some really lovely unicorn crafts around, here’s a roundup of some of the best tutorials and downloadable templates.
UNICORN PARTY DECORATIONS
Let’s not forget about creating a magical unicorn ambience with some carefully chosen unicorn party decorations. Here are some ideas to get your creative juices flowing.
Given that rainbows are often associated with unicorns, how about buying a bundle of pastel rainbow-coloured balloons and then adding a few unicorn printed or even unicorn-shaped balloons into the mix?
Streamers in rainbow colours work well and are really budgetf-friendly. Then maybe add in some unicorn bunting or a pennant.
Here are some ideas for decorations to get your creative juices flowing.
SHOWSTOPPING UNICORN BIRTHDAY CAKES
Need inspiration for creating a beautiful unicorn birthday cake? Look no further – you could also send these pics to a cake maker to do the hard work for you!!
Pop one of these beauties in the centre of the dessert table and everyone will feel the unicorn magic in the room!
PARTY FOOD AND DRINK INSPIRATION
If you fancy trying your hand at some homemade party food, here are some lovely ideas for unicorn party food.
There’s no need to go overboard, just choose two or three unicorn-inspired party snacks or treats to add to the menu.
If you mix in a rainbow theme (fun fact: unicorns and rainbows are often linked in folklore because they are both beautiful, magical and rare) you could do a platter of fruit skewers or cut a rainbow selection of veggies into batons.
