If you are about to be a new mom and you want to know what to buy for your newborn baby, my newborn baby shopping list with pictures will help you. I’ve also created a PDF newborn checklist printable and google sheet with budget tracker (no email required for either).
NEWBORN BABY SHOPPING LIST: WHAT TO BUY OR PUT ON YOUR REGISTRY
If you are a mom-to-be keen to get started on your baby registry or baby shopping list, I am here to help. Having been through it myself, I’ve learned a lot and I’m sharing all of it here with you. I’ve created a useful checklist of all the baby items you’ll need and I’ve included pictures of the must-have baby items because it’s easier to plan when you can see what you need to buy!
Whilst it is possible to go super minimalist and buy only the bare necessities, I class ‘necessities’ as the things you need to make your life as a new mom as easy as possible.
I’ve been back over all the things we bought or were kindly given and looked at just how much we used them and how much help they actually were for caring for a newborn baby. Take a look through this list and then start your baby registry by adding everything you want to it.
You might just be at the start of putting together your baby registry, so don’t forget to save this post to Pinterest or bookmark it.

BABY SLEEP ESSENTIALS
Sleep is everything when you have a newborn! Both for your baby and for you. So having the means to get your baby to sleep and stay asleep is vital. One of the biggies that we found really helped was creating a womb-like experience for our baby daughter. Add these items to your shopping list to make the job of getting your baby to sleep so much easier.
1. MOSES BASKET/BASSINET/CO-SLEEPER
Safe until the baby is around three months old and helps decrease the risk of SIDS. This co-sleeper bedside crib is a best-seller on Amazon, with 85% five-star reviews from a total of over 2,400 reviews.
2. 3 X SHEETS AND MATTRESS PROTECTORS
3 x sheets and 3 x mattress protectors for Moses basket/bassinet/co-sleeper. I suggest buying sets of three to minimise late-night laundry panics!!
3. WHITE NOISE MACHINE
White noise machine, these things are AMAZING. They remind your baby of being in the womb, which is such a great way to get them to go to sleep and stay asleep.
4. BLACKOUT CURTAIN
Blackout curtain. I couldn’t recommend getting a blackout curtain more highly. A blackout curtain is a perfect partner to a white noise machine for creating a womb-like environment for your baby to get a lovely cosy sleep
5. 3 X SWADDLE SACKS
3 x Swaddle sacks, another essential for your womb-like armoury!! The SwaddleMe sacks come in a wide array of delicious colors and patterns and are hugely popular on Amazon. I vote for swaddle sacks over swaddling blankets, because babies still seem to be able to wriggle out of swaddling blankets
6. BABY MONITOR
Baby monitor, the trend is to have a video monitor, so you can see and hear your baby during their nap times and then later on when they are in their own room. The Infant Optics DXR-8 Video Baby Monitor is an absolute best-seller on Amazon, with a nearly full 5-star rating from over 39,529 parents who’ve bought one. Take a look at some of the five-star reviews here.
We started off with our baby daughter sleeping in our room at night, which is in line with guidelines that say state it’s safest for a baby to sleep in the same room as its parent/s for the first six to 12 months. However, we also set up a nursery for her, where she slept during the day and which she transitioned into. So, here are the nursery necessities you should buy or register for.
1. CONVERTIBLE CRIB
There are a zillion different cribs to choose from, we went for one that converted from a crib to a toddler bed – a great way to save money! The Dream On Me convertible crib is a really well-priced best-seller on Amazon. It comes in 12 different colours and has an average 4.6 star reviews from over 1,400 happy parents.
2. NATURAL CRIB MATTRESS
We put a lot of thought into buying a natural, breathable crib mattress. It felt right to make sure we were putting out daughter on a natural surface free from potentially harmful chemicals. This Newton Breathe-Thru crib mattress allows air to flow freely to reduce the risk of suffocation and CO2 rebreathing. It has won numerous awards.
3. 3 x FITTED CRIB SHEETS AND 3 X WATERPROOF MATTRESS COVERS
The more you have, the less emergency laundry you will find yourself doing!!
DIAPERING SHOPPING LIST
TOP TIP: Disposable diapers are going to be one of your biggest expenses. If you sign up to the Amazon Baby Registry and spend $500 you will get 20% off diapers for your baby’s first year. There are two ways to combine your discount with up to a further 20% discount:
- Amazon Prime members can sign up for Amazon Family and get an extra 20% discount.
- Sign up to Subscribe & Save and get up to 20% discount
There are ecological pros and cons to both disposable diapers and reusable diapers. So I suggest you go with what you feel most comfortable with. We went with disposable diapers and I am really happy with our choice.
So, if you want to stock up on disposables, get prepared by buying 84 x newborn size disposable diapers. If you want to go with reusable (cloth) diapers, the go for a set of 15 x reusable diapers.
2. DIAPER CHANGING PAD
This is one area where you can really cut back on costs… by not spending out on an expensive diaper changing unit. We managed very well by just using a diaper changing pad on either our bed or on the floor of the nursery. Just make sure you go for a contoured pad to keep your baby safely on it. This is the best-selling diaper changing pad on Amazon.
3. DIAPER CHANGING KIT
Stock up on biodegradable baby wipes and diaper rash ointment
4. DIAPER PALE
Now, this Ubbi odor-locking diaper pale is just brilliant because you don’t need to buy individual diaper sacks for it, you can just use any regular pale/trash bags. That’s a BIG MONEY and TIME SAVER right there!!! The pale stainless steel and has an airtight lock to keep bad diaper smell in, so your nursery smells fresh. I wish, wish, wish we had had one of these, our pale needed its own cassettes of diaper sacks and when it was getting full it gave off an aroma that wasn’t the best. Take a look at glowing reviews from over 5,000 happy parents.
TRAVEL EQUIPMENT LIST
Walking out of the hospital as new parents with your baby for the first time is one of the strangest feelings in the world ever!! We were eternally grateful that we’d taken the time to fit the car seat in the car way ahead of the birth. But even so, we drove home at around 10 miles per hour because we were so struck by how much responsibility we now had to keep our baby daughter safe!!
Here’s a list of the stuff we found essential for travelling around with our daughter in her first weeks and months.
1. CAR SEAT THAT TURNS INTO A STROLLER
You need a car seat by law, so it is essential if you’re bringing your baby home from hospital by car or taxi. We got a car seat that fitted onto our stroller travel system, but I WISH that the Doona car seat had been around. The Doona is a car seat that turns into a stroller. So, on the one hand, you are saving money and on the other – almost much more important hand – you are saving yourself huge amounts of time and stress because I can’t tell you what a pain in the butt it is transferring a car seat to a stroller system!! It has a near full five-star rating on Amazon.
2. BABY CARRIER OR SLING
So, we started off with a front baby carrier, which is a fairly structured piece of kit and my husband loved carrying our baby in it. But I ended up buying a baby sling, which I totally and utterly loved using, my baby daughter felt so much more snuggled into me than she did in the carrier, which was great for comforting her and a lovely experience for me.
It really is a matter of personal choice, so here’s a best-selling Infantino four-in-one convertible front baby carrier it’s worth considering and a best-selling Baby K’tan five-in-one baby sling.
3. DIAPER BAG OR DIAPER BAG INSERT
I went for a diaper bag when my daughter was a baby, however I also love the idea of getting diaper bag inserts like these, which essentially turn any bag into a diaper bag, great if you’re really not into the whole diaper bag look! I love the idea of a backpack diaper bag, it helps spread the weight when you’re out and about, though of course it’s good to have a bag that will slip over the handles of your stroller.
This Ruvalino diaper backpack is a best-seller on Amazon and the ToteSavvy Original 11-Pocket Diaper Bag Organizer Insert gets some great reviews from very happy moms.
FEEDING EQUIPMENT ESSENTIALS
You may plan to breastfeed your baby, you may plan to formula feed your baby. Until your baby is born there is no certainty about how you will actually feed your baby. For example, I planned to breastfeed but ended up combination feeding – breastfeeding and formula feeding – for a year. So here’s a list of feeding essentials that will have you prepared for whichever eventuality.
1. BABY BOTTLES
Don’t go buying a bunch of bottles until you know for sure how you’ll feed your baby. That said, it’s a good idea to have a couple of baby bottles ready for your newborn, at the very least it takes the pressure off. Go for bottles with newborn nipples that mimic breastfeeding, like these from Comotomo (there is a lot of talk about bottle-feeding confusing babies, I had no problem at all feeding my baby daughter from the bottle and breastfeeding her).
2. BOTTLE STERILIZER
We had this Philips Avent Microwave Steam Sterilizer and it was brilliant. It’s a true space saver and also much cheaper than buying a whole big baby sterilizer that sits taking up space in your kitchen. It’s an Amazon Choice product with over 5,000 glowing reviews.
3. BREAST PUMP
I had a manual breast pump, but if I did it all over again, I would go for an electric breast pump. This Bellababy Double Electric Breast Feeding Pump is an Amazon Choice product, with over 4500 reviews from lots of happy breastfeeding moms.
4. NURSING PILLOW
I made so much use of my nursing pillow, it’s the kind of thing you think you won’t need, but a nursing pillow makes it so much easier to get your baby into a good position to feed and makes it so much more comfortable for you. This Boppy Bare Naked Nursing Pillow and Positioner is hugely popular on Amazon with a near-solid five-star review rating.
5. BABY FORMULA
Buy some baby formula, even if you have your heart set on breastfeeding your baby. It takes the pressure off. I am eternally grateful that we had some formula to hand and once I got going with breastfeeding I still used to use formula at times. I always went for an organic dairy formula, like Earth’s Best Organic Infant Formula.
There is a bunch of baby feeding items you will want to add to your shopping list, they include:
Talking of nipple cream, this is a good chance for me to suggest you take a look at my checklist of everything you need in a postpartum care kit for yourself. Whilst it is natural for most of everyone’s attention to be on the newborn baby, you must also take care to look after yourself and give your body a chance to recover and heal postpartum.
KEEPING BABY SAFE AND AMUSED
Much as sleep is a big focus, it’s also important to be prepared for keeping your baby safe and amused during his or her waking hours. If you’re feeling tired or need to get stuff done, the waking hours can feel very long at times. I think it’s pretty much essential to have a baby seat and it’s an added bonus to have an activity mat as well. Both of these will keep your baby safe and stimulated during their waking hours.
1. BABY SEAT
The Fisher-Price Infant-to-Toddler Rocker has calming vibrations to soothe your baby, clackers and rollerball toys attached to help stimulate them and keep them amused and has two recline positions. You can use it for feeding your baby in too, in the early days before you get to highchairs.
This is another great thing to make sure to add to your baby registry!
2. BABY ACTIVITY MAT
So, this Baby Einstein 4-in-1 Kickin’ Tunes Music and Language Discovery Activity Play Gym is everything you could ever want to keep your baby amused!!!!
BATHING AND HEALTH SHOPPING LIST
I found it useful to have a couple of baby towels with hoods and a stack of baby washcloths (these bamboo ones are great). Plus baby shampoo, baby wash and baby lotion. Don’t buy talc, it’s really not good for your baby! There is a lot of debate over whether you actually need a baby bath, but my vote is firmly that you do. It just makes life that little bit easier (and safer) and that is something that you will really value when you’re tired and wrestling with a wet, wriggly baby.
1. BABY BATHTUB
The First Years Sure Comfort Deluxe Newborn to Toddler Tub is a hugely popular best-seller on Amazon, just look at the 9,500+ reviews from happy shoppers. It can be used in the sink or bath. It is ergonomic, easy to clean and comes with a sling to sit your baby in the tub.
NEWBORN BABY CLOTHES NECESSITIES
I’m going to stick to the necessities here, you will no doubt get bought gorgeous baby clothes as gifts – and find yourself buying a ton of gorgeous baby outfits as well. So here are the absolute necessities that you need for your newborn baby.
1. NEWBORN AND 0-3 MONTH ONESIES
Buy yourself 8 to 16 newborn onesies and the same in 0-3 months. It’s amazing how quickly babies grow in their first weeks. Onesies keep your baby comfortable, are super easy to put on and pull off and give you easy access for diaper changes. These Gerber organic cotton onesies are an Amazon best-seller, they come in packs of five and are really well-priced.
2. SOCKS AND HATS
You will need a sun hat for summer babies and a cosy hat for winter babies. Plus you’ll need socks for keeping your newborn’s feet warm. Now one discovery I made is that babies are adept at getting their socks off, so we bought a couple of sets of these wonderful things called Sock Ons. They do as their name suggests and keep babies socks on!! Genius!
HOW TO PLAN YOUR NEWBORN BABY SHOPPING
There’s a lot to think about when you’re having a baby. So it’s worth taking some time to plan how you are going to shop for the baby. Here is a list of some useful things to consider that will help you plan your baby shopping better.
WHEN SHOULD YOU START BUYING THINGS FOR YOUR BABY?
Even though finding out you are pregnant can be one of the most joyous moments in your life, I would suggest you pace yourself before rushing to buy lots of stuff for your baby and the nursery. Maybe satisfy your urge to spend by buying yourself some first-trimester of pregnancy must-haves.
There are several things you should take into consideration before you start you baby shopping:
1. TIME IS ON YOUR SIDE
Unless you found out late, you have several months between finding out you are pregnant and giving birth.
2. 12 WEEKS
Consider waiting until you have passed the 12-week point and had your first scan. Maybe satisfy your short-term shopping cravings by putting together your baby registry/wish list?
I’m massively pro gender-neutral baby clothes and toys. However, if you know you are going to find out the gender of your baby ahead of the birth, you might well be better off buying certain things on your shopping list until after the big reveal.
4. BABY SHOWER
If someone is throwing you a baby shower it would be good to sign up to a baby registry and then do your own shopping once you’ve had the shower. Baby showers usually take place between month six and month eight. So consider the timing that works best for you.
5. AIM FOR DONE BY 8 MONTHS
It’s a good idea to have bought the most important baby stuff by the time you are 8 months pregnant. There are several reasons for this:
- You will be at your heaviest and most tired by this point
- A due date is a rough estimate, your baby might come early
- It will keep your stress levels down and you can focus on buying the more fun stuff
As a sidenote, it’s also a good idea to have your hospital bag prepped and packed by eight months too. I’ve got a post on the hospital bag essentials to include for you, your new baby and the baby’s daddy / birthing partner.
6. MONEY SAVING
Depending on the time of year your baby is due, there might be some good opportunities to buy the big baby stuff and save money. I’m thinking Black Friday, the January sales, summer sales. It’s a good idea to have a budget drawn up and then you can plan in buying something if you find it with a big saving.
Talking of money-saving, here are some great tips on how to save money on buying stuff for your new baby.

HOW TO SAVE MONEY ON YOUR BABY SHOPPING
Here are some great tips on things to bear mind before you start putting together your newborn baby shopping list.
1. PLAN BEFORE YOU SHOP ONLINE
Online shopping is SO easy and I wholeheartedly embrace it. However, it isn’t always the best way to save money. Especially if you end up filling up your cart to get free delivery! Sometimes a well planned shopping trip will save you money.
2. DIAPER SAVINGS
Diapers are a big expense. Your baby is likely to be using them until sometime between 18 months (super early in my book) and 3 years old. Of course some kids need them for longer. Whilst buying your first packet of diapers will be a thrill, buying your fiftieth will be less so!
Some parents like to diaper stockpile ahead of the baby arriving, this way they can home in on the best deals. Remember to hold onto your receipts if you do this, as you won’t know for sure that the diapers you’ve bought work well for your baby until your baby is using them.
TOP TIP: Sign up to the Amazon Baby Registry, spend $500 and get 20% off diapers for your baby’s first year. Amazon Prime members can also sign up for Amazon Family and get an extra 20% discount. Or anyone can sign up to Subscribe & Save and get up to 20% further discount (Maximum total discount 40%).
The other way to go about it is to ALWAYS LOOK FOR DEALS rather than just buy through the same retailer. There is always somewhere that will have a discount running.
3. BUY MULTI-PURPOSE BABY STUFF
You can’t do this with everything, but here are a few ideas:
- Baby crib that converts into a toddler bed
- The Stokke Tripp Trapp baby seat is an amazing piece of kit, as it can be adapted as your baby becomes and toddler and on into childhood.
- Baby travel system – can fit a baby car seat, will support your baby lying down and later when they are sitting up.
4. CHANGE UP YOUR WASHING AND GROOMING ESSENTIALS
The most important thing when washing and bathing your baby is to make sure the products you use are as simple and free from nasties as possible. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean you have to buy everything especially for a baby. If you don’t already, consider swapping your everyday shower gel, face wash, shampoo for gentle, organic, chemical-free products that everyone in the household can use.
5. BORROW RATHER THAN BUY
There are some nice-to-haves like a moses basket, that your baby will be in for a matter of weeks. Ask a friend for one to borrow or have as a hand-me-down, then pass on the favor when you’re done with it.
I really hope this list of baby essentials have helped you put together a baby shopping list that means you are ready for the arrival of your newborn baby with plenty of energy to spare for making the most of the first few days, weeks and months with your precious new baby.
I’ve got a growing list of new mom and baby posts, so take a look and see if there is anything else I can help you with.
